The Fat Lady Is Singing
Not like we needed any additional evidence but while prepping for the upcoming ADA conference in Boston, and yes contrary to popular belief we do actually work at ADA, we came across some information that points to just how bad things have become in the conventional glucose monitoring world. Looking over the list of companies who will be exhibiting guess how many BGM companies there are. Go ahead we dare you, in fact we’ll double dare you.
Three – yes just three BGM companies will be exhibiting in Boston.
Now guess which three – heck we’ll save you the trouble and name them- LifeScan, Nipro and TelCare – that’s it. No Abbott (NYSE:ABT), no Roche, no Bayer.
Heck there just as many CGM companies as there are BGM companies.
Now we can understand why Bayer isn’t exhibiting but no Roche, no Abbott. These used to be two of the biggest booths at the show. Perhaps the rumors are true and Abbott is getting ready to sell their unit which is why they aren’t exhibiting.
Yet even more astonishing is not the absence of once major players but where are the BGM wannabes – you know who we’re talking all those companies who have whiz bang way cool technology.
The fact is the show itself is mere shell of its former glory and if changes are not made and made quickly it will become a non-event if it hasn’t already. As we’ve stated in the past shows like CES, mHealth and HIMSS have supplanted the ADA conference as being must attend events.
This doesn’t mean Boston won’t have it moments as Merck (NYSE:MRK) will be releasing detailed data from their TECOS study. Johnson and Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN) and to some extent Lilly (NYSE:LLY) will face questions on their respective SGLT2’s. Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) will surly face questions on how Afrezza is doing and contrary to what many believe this is going to go from bad to worse, but we digress.
To be honest Diabetic Investor takes no joy in seeing the demise of this once thriving market. However as we have said consistently all the major BGM players contributed to this demise. The party has been over for a long time and the Fat Lady is singing loudly.
