Roche Decimating Diabetes Sales Force

Roche Decimating Diabetes Sales Force

Diabetic Investor has learned that Roche has eliminated 40% of their diabetes sales force in what is becoming a desperate attempt to keep this struggling division profitable. While the diabetes franchise, glucose monitoring in particular, continues to perform well overseas here in North America it’s a vastly different story. Frankly Diabetic Investor is not surprised by this news as we have chronicled the many issues facing the company as they fallen from the top of the mountain into the abyss.

This move should also send a clear and unmistakable message to the many companies who believe that they can build a better mouse trap. As everyone knows GE (NYSE:GE) just the other day announced their entry into the glucose monitoring market, something Diabetic Investor reported on well before the “official” announcement. Diabetic Investor is also hearing rumors that Panasonic is considering terminating their agreement with Bayer and entering the market by themselves, that Bayer is considering buying Abbott’s (NYSE:ABT) struggling diabetes device unit, that Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), Nestle’, Phillips Electronics and host of other companies are strongly considering coming into the market.

Did we mention that besides the Big Four (or should we start calling them the shrinking BGM companies formerly known as the Big Four) Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) has entered the market and newcomers TelCare and Intuity have some slick offerings that will grab share. And let’s not forget Nipro who currently owns the co-branded segment of the market or what about AgaMatrix. If all this is making everyone just a little dizzy looming on the horizon is Alere (NYSE:ALR) who is getting set to re-enter the market and has the experience and known how to become a destructive force.

What this news by Roche and this zest by which everyone else wants to enter the BGM market tells Diabetic Investor is that PT was right and there is a sucker born every minute and when it comes to BGM the surest way to accumulate a small fortune is to start with a big one. Diabetic Investor has always known that the diabetes device world is one of the wacky worlds to live in and that nothing that happens in this market should surprise anyone even an “old” veteran like Diabetic Investor but we are constantly amazed at the number of companies who are ready and anxious to lose millions of dollars.

Honestly we are not making this stuff up – RIBIT!
