Higher than a kite
There is no polite way to say this so please sit down before reading – IF ONE MORE COMPANY STATES THAT THEY HAVE SOMETHING AS GOOD AS DEXCOM OR WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE SOMETHING EVEN BETTER THAN DEXCOM MOMMA KLIFF WILL GET OUT THE HICKORY FOR A WELL DESERVED WHOOPING.
We mention this as it seems that Medtronic isn’t the only company which is delusional about the standalone CGM market. Check out this release;
“Ascensia Diabetes Care today announced it has entered into a global alliance with Zhejiang POCTech, Co., Ltd (POCTech), a developer and manufacturer of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.”
Never here of POCTech, us either and if you are interested here’s the website http://www.poctechcorp.com/en/.
But here is what we have learned which just might make a trip to the site unnecessary although possibly amusing. The system is NOT approved by the FDA. It does have a CE mark- which would be special expect everyone including Momma Kliff has a CE Mark. The system requires multiple finger stick calibrations and there is little hard data that proves the damn thing works or is accurate. Nor is there any evidence the company can manufacture in scale an accurate and reliable sensor – something with all their money Medtronic cannot do.
Given that the Bay Area is currently the epicenter of healthcare and that CGM is the hottest thing going in diabetes tech it should shock no one that we have been approached by numerous companies that claim to be as good as or will be better than Dexcom. And not to digress here but it is odd that none of these CGM wannabes ever compares themselves to Abbott and the FreeStyle Libre which isn’t a bad system by any means.
All the CGM wannabes share some common traits other than saying they are as good as or will be better than Dexcom, they also claim;
1. They are cheaper.
2. There is plenty of room in the CGM market for more players.
Now ask them how they plan to compete in this market, assuming of course they can get the damn thing through the FDA, and well the answers become cloudy. Ask them about the mundane things like getting on formulary or supporting the system or getting the system into the hands of patients and lets just say thank goodness pot is legal here in California. And while we do not have direct knowledge of this our sources indicate that the pot sold today is 100X better than what we experimented with way back in the day.
Come to think of it these companies would have a much easier time making money investing in the pot business, another market which excuse the expression is growing, than pursuing their way cool whiz bang CGM. Although we are dying to hear one of these companies tell us they have found a way to combine CGM and pot into one system. Which would be pretty cool as a patient could watch their glucose levels rise while they have the munchies.
Listen we know there is likely some company out there who actually has something that could be as good as or better than Dexcom. A company which isn’t pulling out the Exubera Bong and getting stoned out of their minds. But the fact is for most of these CGM wannabes they are truly enjoying the benefits of legal pot and are higher than a kite.
