HARD to believe

For years, we have noticed a gender bias when it comes to diabetes research. Over the years we have seen studies that correlate diabetes with breast size or wine drinking. Rarely for reasons we have never understood have we seen studies that are more aligned with male diabetics. Now some of this is understandable as given the choice of examining the correlation between breast size and diabetes or working with men and their sizes, well the choice is a no-brainer. However, every once in a blue moon a study does come along that offers hope for men with diabetes.

A British study which consisted of 6,000 men of which 1,359 took Viagra, found these patients have 50% less of a chance of dying from heart disease. Now that’s something to get excited even aroused over.

Lead researcher Professor Andrew Trafford described the latest findings as ‘incredibly exciting’. He said: “Heart failure is a devastating condition which means your heart is not pumping blood around your body as well as it used to. It can really impact a person’s quality of life and currently the outlook for patients with heart failure is grim – worse than that of some cancers.

“Our studies have shown that drugs normally used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction such as Viagra, actually have a very pronounced effect in slowing the progression of heart failure as well as reducing the likelihood of fatal arrhythmias.”

This news could provide Pfizer, the makers of Viagra a perfect pathway to re-enter the diabetes market in a BIG way. Pfizer hasn’t had much luck in diabetes with their most recent experience being Exubera. But the Pfizer Riser as Viagra is sometimes known could help them penetrate deeply into this expanding market.

Given the correlation between the size of a woman’s breast and diabetes combined with this news on Viagra think of the study possibilities. Add in how wine impacts diabetes and the possibilities are endless. We can just see Pfizer partnering with the makers of breast implants plus some wine companies to get this studies funded. Heck just for grins and giggles they could investigate whether a buttery chardonnay or big and bold red is better for patients.

One thing for sure they won’t have to worry about is finding study participants.

We also have a suggestion that could help, conduct the studies in Napa. And if we may be so bold don’t limit it to just wine but include sparkling wines too. Listen we know some great wineries in Napa and would be happy to volunteer our services scouting out potential study locations. Heck they wouldn’t even have to pay us, just pick up the travel and drinking tab and we’re all in.

Diabetic Investor, who just so happens does have an association with a wine consultant, would scour the Napa countryside in search of good wine, regular and sparklingly. We’ll be thrilled to report on the impact of wine, Viagra and diabetes. Just for grins and giggles we’ll also be happy to report the differences between once-daily Viagra and longer acting Cialis.

As Momma Kliff used to say; “Hey it’s a great gig if you can get it.”
