Perhaps the most stunning miracle in sports came during the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid New York when a group of amateur Americans beat a group of basically professionals playing for the Soviet Union. Keep in mind that back in 1980 pro hockey players weren’t allowed in the games and that the USSR was THE powerhouse of international hockey. Frankly no one, not even the players for the USA, believed they stood much of a chance against the mighty Russian team.
