Is there a future for BGM?

With each passing day it’s becoming more apparent that CGM will replace BGM as the standard for glucose measurement. CGM systems are becoming more patient friendly, i.e. no calibrations, simple insertion and cheaper too. The data provided by CGM is transformative leading to improved outcomes. It is no longer a question of if this will happen but when this happen. However, there are still millions of patients who use BGM and...

What lies ahead

Let’s get right to the point and state for the record building an insulin pump, tethered or patch, is the easy part. No disrespect to any company but any idiot can build an insulin pump, and many have. This as Momma Kliff used to say is the easy part, building the damn thing. Given that so many companies have joined the Dead Cat Club Insulin Pump division we thought it would...

Dead Cat Club

Rather than start a fund for the poor dead cat, we have decided instead to establish a Dead Cat Club. That anytime someone enters the insulin pump, CGM, app arena they get an immediate and full membership rights of the club. Which include but are not limited to the following- Insulin Pump Members receive the privilege of entering one of the most complex, labor intensive, high cost markets plus the additional...

Monopoly Money

As the diabetes world departs from steamy Orlando a few last pieces of news and some thoughts. Yesterday Abbott issued a press release which stated; “Expanded Real-World Evidence from More than 250,000 individuals using Freestyle libre system Showed Higher Frequency Scanning is Associated with improved glucose control, decreased glucose variability and reduced incidence of both daytime and nocturnal hypoglycemia” Now we don’t want to belabor this point but will someone please explain to...

Have they learned anything?

The biggest question we have whenever we visit one of these toy fairs is have the companies in this wacky world of ours learned anything. Have they figured out that success in diabetes is not related to patient outcomes? Have they figured out that it’s not about the toys in the toy chest? Interestingly it’s the drug companies who have learned the most. That as much as they would like...

A Different Ending?

A few quick observations before we get into the gist of today’s post. First and this is in line with how our wacky world is changing this show which used to be dominated by drug companies has become more of a toy fair. That poor dead cat can’t be swung without hitting a CGM, insulin pump or app company. The drug companies are here, and we must admit we miss...

Who gets the payoff?

Before we give our initial thoughts on the conference it’s time to start a fund for that poor dead cat. Walking around the exhibit hall, which continues to shrink, guess what we see? Toys and more toys, apps and more apps. About the only thing we don’t see is BGM yep a show which used to be dominated by BGM is now a show dominated by CGM. That poor dead...

Busy Day at the FDA

Yesterday the FDA announced not just one but two approvals in the diabetes device arena. Senseonics received approval for their Eversense implantable CGM while Tandem (NASDAQ: TNDM) received approval for their t:slim X2™ Insulin Pump with Basal-IQ™ technology. Of the two approvals we see the Tandem as more significant as it puts them on a path to compete head on with insulin pump market leader Medtronic (NYSE: MDT). A few quick...

The Calm Before the Storm

A few housekeeping items before the conference begins. As has become our custom we will attempt to post each day provided we have time to write. While we aren’t big on Twitter you can follow us at @diabetic_invstr. Not sure how much we’ll be Tweeting, hope that’s the correct terminology, but you never know. In the good news department there is still time to order our nearly completed special report. While...

The Irony of it all

This morning we learned that Walgreens will be replacing GE on the Dow. Yesterday CVS announced they have partnered with the U S Postal Service for home delivery of medications. And naturally everyone continues to speculate as to when Amazon will move into the pharmacy business. While it may not seem that any of these moves are related to our wacky world the fact is they all are. With the diabetes...
