Tandem Acquires Sigi™
This morning Tandem announced they would be acquiring AMF Medical makers of the Sigi™ patch pump. Before we get into an analysis of this deal and what it means for the insulin pump market a few points need to be addressed first. 1. The Sigi is NOT FDA approved although it does have FDA Breakthrough designation. 2. While the company did not provide a timeline for FDA approval, they did note they...
As easy as
If there is one thing you can count on when it comes to our wacky world it’s our unique ability to over complicate things. Instead of making something as easy as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich companies seem intent on finding the longest distance between two points. Back when BGM was king a respected researcher noted that if a patient tested their levels by the book there were 28...
Lilly Calls it quits
Ypsomed announced that Lilly terminated their joint US insulin pump project. Not sure how many partners Lilly has worked with on this ill-fated crazy effort to enter the insulin pump market but hopefully this is the last one. We’d like to say that the company realized it was crazy to compete with Insulet, Tandem and Medtronic. That it was foolish to believe they could make money starting from ground zero....
An FDA Gift to Dexcom
Now I don’t want to put a lump of coal in Dexcom’s Xmas stocking but this morning’s announcement that the FDA had finally approved the G7 was like finding out that Georgia was going to be the number one seed in the college football playoffs. Everyone knew the G7 would eventually gain approval which is likely why the stock while up it isn’t skyrocketing. With G7 now approved everyone else...
The game hasn’t changed
Way back when Diabetic Investor began BGM was state of the art glucose measuring technology. Back then the market was dominated by LifeScan then a unit of JNJ, Roche, Bayer before they foolishly became Ascensia and Abbott. LifeScan and Roche owned about 75% of the market with Bayer, Abbott and lots of wannabes fighting over the remaining 25%. Before competitive bidding came along this was a great business as you...
The Next Frontier
One of the most impressive presentations I have ever seen was made by Tandem a few years back at JP Morgan. Back then Tandem was innovative for their iPhone like design and patient friendly user interface. The company noted back when the Medtronic pumps came online the state of art technology at the time were pagers, so it was no accident that their pumps looked like a pager. Today companies...
Perspective It helps
Right around the Thanksgiving holiday Ypsomed announced that their mylife insulin pump received authorization to work with the Libre 3 sensor in Germany. This would make the mylife system the fourth hybrid closed loop insulin delivery system commercially available with a fifth, the iLet from Beta Bionics in the on-deck circle. What makes this announcement notable is that all the other hybrid closed loop systems work with the Dexcom sensor...
